It only takes a few seconds delay in noticing someone's brake lights coming on in front of you, and you will not stop in time. Particularly if you are travelling at speed, your reaction times are vital.

Physical distraction

How many times have you seen people pass you with one hand on the wheel and the other hand tapping out a text on their phone? Modern phones also have a multitude of features and menus to navigate, this not only means you are not concentrating on your driving, it means you only have one hand on the steering wheel. If you have to take evasive action in an emergency, you are unlikely to be able to do it safely using one hand.

All current research indicates that using a mobile phone, whether hands free or not, will increase your chances of having a road accident.
