Why mobile phones cause accidents

Any kind of distraction whilst you are driving is potentially dangerous and can cause accidents. Anyone driving a vehicle on the road needs to pay close attention to the constantly changing traffic conditions and situations around them to in order to ensure that they drive safely on the roads.

Thanks to the widespread availability and low cost of mobile handsets today, the statistical chances of a road accident being caused by the distraction of texting or taking a phone call has increased hugely.

Using a mobile phone whilst driving is not only dangerous, it is also illegal. Despite the laws being tightened up in 2007 to include a £60 fine and 3 penalty points, many drivers continue to use their phones whilst driving. Research from the Department for Transport suggests that drivers using mobiles when driving are four times more likely to be involved in a car accident than those who don't.

There are 2 key issues involved in using mobile phones that can lead to road accidents.

Mental distraction

Whether you are using a handheld or hands free phone, having any kind of conversation is going to make you stop concentrating on controlling your vehicle. It is like driving when being over-tired, your concentration is constantly being momentarily interrupted. It only takes a few seconds delay in noticing someone's brake lights coming on in front of you, and you will not stop in time. Particularly if you are travelling at speed, your reaction times are vital.

Physical distraction

How many times have you seen people pass you with one hand on the wheel and the other hand tapping out a text on their phone? Modern phones also have a multitude of features and menus to navigate, this not only means you are not concentrating on your driving, it means you only have one hand on the steering wheel. If you have to take evasive action in an emergency, you are unlikely to be able to do it safely using one hand.

All current research indicates that using a mobile phone, whether hands free or not, will increase your chances of having a road accident.
